The OPERAS Channel on the wemakeit platform

To promote the use of crowdfunding in its community, the OPERAS Research Infrastructure is launching a dedicated channel on the crowdfunding platform wemakeit.com: the OPERAS Channel. 

We invite researchers from all Social Sciences and Humanities disciplines to run their crowdfunding campaign with the OPERAS channel, get tips from the wemakeit experts to boost their campaign and benefit from the support of the OPERAS community.

Whether you are an early career researcher in a university or other research institution, an independent researcher, or an established scholar looking to start a new line of research, the wemakeit platform is for you. No matter if you need funds to publish critical editions, to organise scientific exhibitions, to launch surveys and studies with local or global impact, the OPERAS channel is the way to go!

The first researchers that will launch their project campaign in early 2022 will, as a bonus, receive extra support by an external communication agency, funded by the French Ministry for Education, Research and Innovation!

Introduction workshop on 13 January

Are you curious about what crowdfunding can do for you and for the Social Sciences and Humanities? Just one hint: it is not just about money. 

If you consider starting a project campaign with us, but do not know where to start, we offer a 1-hour introduction workshop on Thursday, 13 January 2022 at 17:00 CET.

The science crowdfunding experts from wemakeit will provide you with tips and tools to understand what crowdfunding is, how it can be applied to science, and how to launch your own campaign on the OPERAS channel of wemakeit to collect financial support from the crowd, but also communicate your research in the most exciting format. The presentation will be followed by 30 minutes of Q&A – we want to make sure you have all the information you need to get started with your project.

Why a collaboration of OPERAS and wemakeit?

OPERAS is the Research Infrastructure supporting open scholarly communication in the Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) in the European Research Area. The aim of OPERAS is to make Open Science a reality for research in the SSH and achieve a scholarly communication system where knowledge produced in the SSH benefits researchers, academics, students and more generally the whole society across Europe and worldwide, without barriers.

OPERAS is creating a portfolio of different scholarly communication services at European level, addressing the specific needs of the research community. One of these services is the discovery platform GoTriple, developed by us, the TRIPLE project (2019–2023). It is through the TRIPLE project that OPERAS and wemakeit collaborate.

In addition to its core discovery function, the GoTriple platform integrates a range of other innovative services and tools, including a crowdfunding platform. Both platforms, GoTriple and the OPERAS channel from wemakeit, are interconnected to provide an ideal environment for SSH researchers and their projects.

wemakeit was founded in Switzerland in 2012 and is now one of the largest crowdfunding platforms in Europe, with a total of over 66 million Euro of backings, more than 5,500 successful projects and almost 500,000 community members.

wemakeit collaborates with a range of different partners, among them media partners, foundations, organisations and companies. OPERAS is one of them, and the OPERAS channel is one of currently 13 active channels and initiatives of wemakeit that back and support projects.

The TRIPLE project has launched the first of several training resources on the DARIAH-Campus platform.  The training resource, entitled ‘The Open Access Publishing Platform ORE (Open Research Europe)‘, provides technical details on how ORE works and the benefits it has for researchers in the Social Sciences and Humanities. The training, which was part of the TRIPLE Open Science Training Series, was jointly led by Emma Lazzeri, Open Science researcher at GARR and ISTI-CNR, and Ilaria Fava, Project Officer in the field of Open Science at the Goettingen State University Library (UGOE), in April 2021.

The collection of resources that TRIPLE will contribute to DARIAH-Campus over the coming months will provide training on EOSC activities and related issues.  As both DARIAH and TRIPLE are committed to ensuring best practice in Open Science, this collection of resources will form an important contribution to ongoing skills development among researchers in the Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities.

Are you interested in helping with the initial testing of the Beta version of the GoTriple platform?  We currently offer different ways to do just that!

The TRIPLE project has partnered with another European H2020 project called ReachOut to recruit early testers.

ReachOut, the beta-testing campaign platform for research projects, is able to offer a 30 Euro reward for up to 24 participants for the testing of the Beta version of GoTriple via their website.  Participants will be entered into a draw if more than this number fully complete the test. Testing will take less than an hour with a short questionnaire to complete at the end to tell us what you think of the platform so far and what should be improved.  To start the testing, please use this link: https://www.reachout-project.eu/view/Main/#TRIPLE_anc.

The Beta version of GoTriple is an initial release of some of the planned features of GoTriple. SSHOC provides a comprehensive research environment for researchers in the Social Sciences and the Humanities (SSH). Its SSH marketplace is a user-centric service for collaboration and knowledge sharing across SSH communities. Its value stems from the automatic ingestion and updating of SSH resources such as tools and trainings from third parties (thus suggesting improvements of scientific workflows for the SSH researchers); continuous curation of the information by the marketplace’s editorial team and contributions from its users, the SSH community.

TRIPLE is working in complementarity with the SSHOC project. With the multilingual discovery platform GOTRIPLE, TRIPLE provides a single access point that allows you to explore, find, access and reuse materials such as research publications and data, projects and researcher profiles at European scale.

Both projects work in concert on service governance to optimise user involvement and improve SSH research. As thematic hubs, SSHOC and TRIPLE will bring to the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC): research tools and training materials, publications and data as well as other SSH resources, enabling researchers to increase the value of their SSH research and to facilitate innovation. The services from both projects will help build bridges with other scientific communities with a view to boosting interdisciplinarity and contributions to societal challenges.

SSHOC and TRIPLE bring to the European Open Science Cloud a rich and diverse pool of stakeholders, as illustrated in the image below.

In early June, TRIPLE signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NEANIAS with the aim to foster a collabaration between two projects which are financed under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation action funding scheme INFRAEOSC-02-2019 “Prototyping new innovative services”. This makes NEANIAS and TRIPLE two complementary European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) projects in the domain of Open Science.

The acronym NEANIAS stands for “Novel EOSC services for Emerging Atmosphere, Underwater and Space Challenges”. The NEANIAS project, which lasts 36 months and involves 20 partners from 9 European countries, is a focused Open Science project in the field of co-design and delivery of innovative thematic services, derived from state-of-the-art research assets and practices in three major sectors: Underwater, atmospheric and space research.

Considering the fact that NEANIAS and TRIPLE are two initiatives in the field of data research, the MoU is targeted at bilateral information exchange and collaboration. This will benefit the respective goals of both projects, especially in the areas of communication & outreach, dissemination, validation and exploitation activities. It will ultimately help us join forces in our Open Science ambitions.

The TRIPLE consortium is glad to announce a collaboration with the European Digital Service Infrastructure (DSI) eTranslation.

As part of the European Union’s Digital Single Market strategy, a variety of different Digital Service Infrastructures, also called “Building Blocks”, are funded by the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) programme.

eTranslation is one of these Building Blocks. It is “… an automated translation tool available to translate text excerpts or complete documents. It is also a Building Block you can integrate into your digital systems, if you need to embed them with translation capabilities.” (https://ec.europa.eu/cefdigital/wiki/display/CEFDIGITAL/eTranslation).

The European Commission (EC) has also started to look into addressing the language barriers in the area of scientific publications. The European Parliament Resolution of 11 September 2018 on language equality in the digital age (2018/2028(INI)), in particular Recommendation § 33, urges “the Commission to seek solutions to ensure that scientific knowledge is made available in languages other than English”.

The future multilingual GOTRIPLE platform takes up the challenge of making research data from the social sciences and humanities (SSH) available in 9 languages (Croatian, French, English, German, Greek, Italian, Polish, Portuguese and Spanish). In view of the upcoming Digital Europe Programme (DIGITAL) and a possible opening of the eTranslation API to academic users, the TRIPLE project is among the first to be involved in a pilot testing of that API for the scientific domain.
